Ancient sources report that Tyre suffered structural damage during a powerful earthquake that struck the Phoenician coast. According to Pseudo Joshua the Stylite, refugees from Tyre and Sidon reported that parts of their cities collapsed on the same day that the nearby city of Ptolemais (Acre) was flattened. The account indicates that sections of Tyre’s structures fell during the earthquake, suggesting significant shaking along the coastal settlements. A later chronicle by Pseudo-Dionysius of Tell-Mahre similarly records that a “mighty earthquake” overturned Ptolemais (Acre) as well as Tyre and Sidon.
