Ancient sources report that Akko suffered severe damage during a powerful earthquake that struck the Phoenician coast. According to Pseudo Joshua the Stylite, "the city of Ptolemais (Akko), otherwise known as Acre, was flattened on the night that the huge blazing fire was seen, and nothing in it was left standing." A later chronicle by Pseudo-Dionysius of Tell-Mahre similarly records that a “mighty earthquake” overturned Ptolemais (Acre) as well as Tyre and Sidon.
