Ibn al-Latif al-Baghdadi reproduced a letter from Damascus reporting that Paneas was “partly overthrown” during the 1202 CE Earthquakes. In contrast, Abu Shama offered a more severe assessment, stating that “Banyas was destroyed.” A third account by Ibn al-Dawadari strikes a more moderate tone, simply noting that “Banyas suffered.”
