Ancient sources report that a destructive earthquake struck the Phoenician coast, severely affecting the cities of Tyre and Sidon. According to Jerome’s Latin translation of the second part of the Chronicon by Eusebius, a “horrible earthquake” devastated Tyre and Sidon, destroying many buildings and crushing a large number of inhabitants beneath the ruins. A similar report appears in the work of Orosius, who states that an earthquake in Syria caused the collapse of buildings in Tyre and Sidon, killing many thousands of people.
