Tyre was affected by an earthquake that struck the Levantine coast in 1170 CE. According to William of Tyre, the earthquake was particularly strong at Tyre, where it caused the collapse of several very solidly constructed towers. Despite the intensity of the shaking, he reports that the population itself suffered little direct harm. A later Armenian chronicle by HetĘżum of Korykos also records an earthquake in 1170 that affected numerous cities along the Levantine coast, including Tyre, Acre, Tripoli, Latakia, and Antioch.
