Late Byzantine Earthquake Open this page in a new tab

Erickson-Gini (2013) suggested that structural modifications at Shivta reflect earthquake damage during the Late Byzantine period. A revetment wall outside Room 123 and additional buttressing around the North Church were interpreted as repairs following seismic destruction. As Erickson-Gini (2013) states, "revetment walls present around the North Church and buttressing the western wall of Building 123 (Hirschfeld 2003) are indications that some damage to the site took place in the Late Byzantine period, probably in the early seventh century CE when the neighboring site of ‘Avdat/Oboda was destroyed in a tremendous earthquake."
