Undated Potential Earthquake Evidence Open this page in a new tab

Bloom and Parker (1987) report rock-tumble layers in the south room that overlie Early Byzantine occupation levels, with the latest pottery dating to the 4th century CE. The rock tumble also yielded Early Byzantine pottery and “marked the end of occupation” of the room. Bloom and Parker (1987) further note that, like nearby El-Lejjun, the fortlet at Rujm Beni Yasser appears to have been abandoned around 500 CE. The surface of the site is covered with tumbled stones from the enclosure and towers, but the excavators note that it remains unclear whether this collapse resulted from one or more earthquakes or from gradual structural decay.
