551 CE earthquake - doubtful
Ambraseys (2009) states that "Russell ... argues
that Pella and Ramat Rahel were damaged" in the
551 CE Beirut Quake, where sources indicate limited destruction south of Tyre.
Ambraseys continued that "Pella is
100 km southeast of Tyre" and "Ramat Rahel is just
south of Jerusalem", making it "impossible that this
earthquake damaged the latter." Ambraseys further
adds that "Ambraseys et al. (1994, 24–25) wrongly
place the epicentral region of this event in the
Jordan Rift Valley," attributing this mislocation
to "the bias of information from the debatable
archaeological evidence in
Russell (1985)."
