Sibyl Quake - 76 – 81 CE – probably between June 78 CE and June 79 CE
New Paphos was affected by an earthquake
that struck Cyprus sometime between 76 and 81 CE.
Eusebius wrote that “three cities in
Cyprus were destroyed altogether in an earthquake.”
This account was repeated almost verbatim by
Orosius and
George Syncellus.
Elias of Nisibis and
Sethus Calvisius both cited Eusebius as
their source when describing this earthquake, adding
that the collapses lasted three days and that
Salamis was among the three affected cities.
The
Sibylline Oracles, which appear to be the
most reliable source for this earthquake, report
that
Paphos and
Salamis were destroyed and allude to dark water
“overwhelming” Cyprus, a description that may refer
to a post-earthquake tsunami. Since several sources
refer to the destruction of three cities on Cyprus,
Ambraseys (2009) speculated that the third city
was likely
Kition (Citium).
