Dareya (Darayya)
(Arabic: داريا; Dārayyā) is a historic city immediately
southwest of Damascus in southwestern Syria. It lies in
Rif Dimashq Governorate,
approximately 8 km southwest of central Damascus and on
the western margin of the
Ghouta oasis. The city
occupies the transition between the irrigated plain
surrounding Damascus and the drier uplands farther west.
Dareya has long been closely connected with Damascus
through agriculture, trade, roads, and the settlement
pattern of the surrounding oasis. Its position near the
capital placed it within the economic and defensive
landscape of Damascus during the Roman, Byzantine,
Umayyad, Abbasid, and later Islamic periods.
