1114 CE Marash Quake
In his work The Antiochene Wars,
Walter the Chancellor recorded that on the night of
29 November 1114 CE, “there was an immense and terrible earthquake in
Antioch and its region.” After describing the destruction in Antioch,
he wondered, “What of al-Atharib?” and “What of the other Antiochene
lands?” Although he observed that “a comparable torment was imagined
happening in quite disparate places,” he offered no clear answer
regarding the fate of al-Atharib.
Kemal ad-Din (also known as Ibn al-ʿAdim), however, did
address the matter, reporting that al-Atharib was “almost completely
destroyed.”
