Marriner et al. (2005) conducted a litho and a biostratigraphical study of four sediment cores from the landward edge of the modern harbor. Material recovered from the cores was dated using AMS radiocarbon dating. The authors conclude that sedimentary deposits from the 1st millennium BCE are absent because of dredging activity undertaken during the Roman and Byzantine periods.
