Tyre was among the coastal cities reported to have been affected by an earthquake in the mid-11th century CE. According to Ibn al-Jawzi, in Shaʿban A.H. 455 (30 July - 27 August 1063 CE) an earthquake struck a number of cities across the eastern Mediterranean, including Antioch, Latakia, Tripoli, Tyre, and Acre (Ptolemais). His account specifically notes that the walls of Tripoli collapsed during the shaking, implying strong ground motion further north along the Levantine coast. A later report by as-Suyūṭī also places Tyre among the cities affected by the same earthquake, reporting shaking across a wide region including Wasit, Antioch, Latakia, Sur (Tyre), ‘Akka (Acre), and parts of Syria and Anatolia.
