Killebrew et. al. (2023) encountered a destruction layer in Stratum VI of the SE Complex of Area A on the Tel. They suggested human agency as a possible cause noting that "the destruction of Stratum A6 may be associated with the documented destruction of ‘Akko in 644 BCE by Ashurbanipal". The destruction layer (DS2171, DS2188) was found in Sq OO20 "on surfaces associated with Stratum A6." Here, excavators found "in situ restorable vessels, dated to the mid-eighth–mid-seventh centuries BCE" resting "above the unexcavated ninth-century BCE mudbrick architecture of Stratum A7." They further report that "the restorable vessels from the destruction debris on Surface 2171 included two bowls and three storage jars" while "an additional storage jar was found in the destruction debris on Surface 2188."
