Akko experienced damage during the 1837 CE Safed Earthquake that devastated much of the Galilee and the southern Levant. Contemporary reports indicate that the fortifications were damaged and that a number of people died or were wounded. A brief notice in The Times (London) described the fortifications of Akko as damaged or destroyed and “7 or 8 killed or wounded.”
