Duman et al. (2020) report that Event E2 in the Yeniköy Trench (T4) is constrained to between 255 and 540 CE ( calibrated radiocarbon age ranges), and suggest that this event may correlate with the historical earthquake of 242 CE. Ambraseys (2009) lists an earthquake in 240–241 CE in the vicinity of Aphrodisias, while Guidoboni et al. (1994) list a possible earthquake at Aphrodisias in 241 CE. Event E2 was bracketed by two radiocarbon samples. One sample from Unit C, immediately above the E2 event horizon, yielded calibrated age ranges of 255–295 CE or 320–415 CE. A second sample from Unit B3, located some distance below the E2 event horizon, yielded a calibrated age range of 395–540 CE. Because the Unit C sample lies in close stratigraphic proximity to the E2 deformation horizon, Duman et al. (2020) suggest that "it is possible that E2 correlates to the historical AD 242 event, the largest earthquake in the region during the historical period." They further report that the deformation geometry is "consistent with a strike-slip fault that has a considerable vertical component of motion."

Duman et al. (2020) also suggest that the same seismic event may be represented in other trenches with broader or less tightly constrained chronological windows. All possible correlating events identified in the Sürgü–Misis trench system are summarized in the table below:
