Deformed Layer 8
Deformation Layer 8 at Nahal Darga occurs in unit 10 and is dated by
Enzel et al. (2000) to ca. 450-50 BCE
(ca. 2400-2000
yr B.P.). The deformed bed is
~20 cm thick and consists of fine to
medium sand with a few
laminae of
aragonite deposited
in a near-shore
fan-delta setting. The principal deformation
features include
flame structures with
some
load casts and a
minor amount of
ball-and-pillow structures within an "intensely deformed bed."
The deformation is beleived to have occurred when the sediment was at
or very near the surface and the structures are
interpreted as due to earthquake-induced
liquefaction. Dating is based on
radiocarbon dating and
stratigraphic correlation within the fan-delta
sequence;
Bayesian modeling was not used in
the age determinations.
