Deformed Layer 7
Deformation Layer 7 at Nahal Darga occurs in unit 9 above
Deformation Layer 6 and is dated by
Enzel et al. (2000) to ca. 1050-450 BCE
(ca. 2400-3000
yr B.P.). The deformed bed is
~150 cm thick and consists primarily of fine to
medium sand with a few
laminae of
aragonite deposited
in a near-shore
fan-delta setting. The principal deformation
features are
ball-and-pillow structures inside an intensely deformed layer.
The deformation is interpreted to have occurred when the sediment was at
or very near the surface and was due to
earthquake-induced
liquefaction rather than the result of
loading or depositional processes.
Dating is based on
radiocarbon dating and
stratigraphic correlation within the fan-delta
sequence;
Bayesian modeling was not used in
the age determinations. The upper bound on age
(2400 yr B.P.) is based on an undeformed layer of oganic matter above unit 9 but below unit 10.
