Deformed Layer 6
Deformation Layer 6 at Nahal Darga occurs in unit 7 well above
the cluster of Deformation Layers 3–5 and is dated by
Enzel et al. (2000) to ca. 6050-5050 BCE
(ca. 7000-8000
yr B.P.). The deformed bed is
~0-60 cm thick and consists of fine sand and silt deposited in a near-shore fan-delta
environment. Deformation features
include
load casts and
ball-and-pillow structures within an intensely deformed layer. The features were interpreted as due to earthquake-induced
liquefaction rather than loading or
depositional processes.
In contrast to the closely spaced
cluster of Layers 3–5, Deformation Layer 6 is
separated stratigraphically by similar but undeformed sediment.
Dating is based on
radiocarbon dating and
stratigraphic correlation within the fan-delta
sequence;
Bayesian modeling was not used in
the age determinations.
