Deformation Layer 1 at Nahal Darga occurs in stratigraphic unit 4 and is dated by Enzel et al. (2000) to 7050–6050 BCE (9000–8000 yr B.P.). The deformed bed is 20–60 cm thick and consists mainly of very fine to medium sand along with very coarse silt. The principal deformation features are load casts and ball-and-pillow structures, indicating soft-sediment deformation in water-saturated, near-shore fan-delta deposits. The deformation appears to have occurred when the bed was at or very near the sediment surface. This is consistent with the broader pattern described by Enzel et al. (2000), in which liquefiable sandy and silty beds were selectively deformed while many similar beds remained undeformed. The features are therefore interpreted as earthquake-induced liquefaction rather than as the result of simple loading, slope failure, or rapid sediment accumulation. Dating is based on radiocarbon dating and stratigraphic correlation within the fan-delta sequence; Bayesian modeling was not used in the age determinations.
