Event E1 earthquake from Demirkopru Trench 1
Altunel et al. (2009)
dated Event E1 in Demirköprü Trench 1 to between
1801 and 1940 CE based on two radiocarbon
samples located immediately above and below the
Event E1 horizon. They suggested that Event E1
most likely corresponds to the 1872 CE Amik Gölü earthquake,
although they noted that the 1822 CE Aleppo earthquake
remains a viable alternative.
Altunel et al. (2009)
also proposed that Event E1 in Demirköprü Trench
2 correlates with the same seismic event
identified in Trench 1. However, the absence of
radiocarbon samples above the Trench 2 E1
horizon limited chronological precision,
resulting in a constraint of no more specific
than "after 1470 CE".
