Kázmér and Major (2010:194) report that Earthquake I "produced the V-shaped extrusion on top of the donjon (60°–240°)", occurring after the donjon was completed but before the southern tower was constructed, since "there are no traces at all of this damage direction on the southern tower". Kázmér and Major (2010:194) dated this event to between 1187 and 1285 CE, after the Hospitallers took the castle but prior to its Mamluk occupation. They identified the 1202 CE earthquake as a likely candidate for Earthquake I. Kázmér and Major (2010:196) further assessed that Earthquake I "consisted of vibration in SW–NE plane, damaging the donjon and room M3."
