Stratum XVII Earthquake - Iron I
Ben-Tor in Ben-Tor et al. (2005a:10) reports a “great” destruction in
Stratum XVII, attributed to the
terminal Iron Age I, and notes that the stratum
ended in a “conflagration.” In Area A1,
Ben-Tor in Ben-Tor et al. (2005a:13) observed westward-tilted floors in
Strata XIX and the overlying XVII,
suggesting that the tilting may have
occurred in a single event, while
cautioning that slope and drainage
conditions could also have contributed.
Most of Area A1 was “covered by a thick
fill of crumbled burnt bricks,” implying
post-destruction abandonment “for a considerable length of
time.” Raphael and Agnon (2018:775)
regarded the destruction as earthquake-related,
while acknowledging that “Stratum XVII exhibited
limited evidence” (Ben-Tor in Ben-Tor et al., 2005a:13).
However, Ben-Tor in Ben-Tor et al. (2005a)
did not assign the destruction to an earthquake.
The chronology of the destruction is based on
ceramic evidence.
