Potential Destructions in Stratum I and II
Speculation arose that Tel Abu Hawam experienced
“a destruction at the eve of the
Hellenistic period,”
that is, around the time of
Alexander's 332 BCE
Siege of Tyre,
a nearby and likely closely affiliated city
(Balensi 1985b:66–69).
This hypothesis was prompted by the discovery of a
fourth-century BCE
coin hoard found
“just over one metre below the original surface of the tell, among
stones forming the foundations of a wall of the
Hellenistic period”
(C. L. 1932).
Notably, the hoard lacked
Alexandrian issues, a detail
that encouraged suggestions of a destruction horizon
preceding or coinciding with the
Macedonian conquest.
Nevertheless, Balensi (1985b:66–69) emphasized
that a systematic review of the material evidence “from
Hamilton’s and Baramki’s excavations” is required before
this proposal can move beyond the level of speculation.
