Kenkel and Hoss (2020:116, 271, 273) report that the 749 CE earthquake caused destruction at Tall Ziraʿa and damaged parts of nearby Gadara. Haser (2025:127) indicates that at the time of the earthquake, Tall Ziraa was "covered with a monastery consisting of a church and living quarters." She added that "although the walls do not show any clear indication of an earthquake, it is highly probable that the destruction of the monastery was caused by the quake in 749," noting that "afterwards, the site was abandoned almost entirely as only few sherds of Abbasid date and the absence of buildings, which can be attributed to this period, indicate."
