Iron I Earthquake (?)
Bourke (2004:8–9) describes a destruction layer
dated to ca. 1150 BCE (Iron I) at the Temple Complex
in Area XXII at Tabaqat Fahl (Pella), as well as
throughout the wider site. He states that "the
remodelled temple remained in use until the end of
the Bronze Age (ca 1150 BC), when the entire site of
Pella suffered a major destruction." Bourke suggests
that "this may also have been due to earthquake
activity, although human agency remains possible,"
noting that this period coincides with "the time of
the enigmatic
Sea People descent on Egypt, generally
(if not always reliably) associated with a
widespread destruction horizon throughout the region
at this time (Sandars 1978)."
Bourke (2004:9) further notes that "post-destruction
Iron Age I (ca 1150–950 BC) temple deposits were badly
disturbed by later building activities."
