End of Early Roman Phase earthquake Open site page in a new tab

Erickson-Gini and Israel (2013) attributed the end of the Early Roman occupation at Moje Awad to an earthquake that they place shortly before the Roman annexation of Nabataea in 106 CE. They state that the Early Roman phase “ended with extensive damage caused by an earthquake” occurring just prior to annexation, citing earlier work by Korzhenkov and Erickson-Gini (2003). According to their description, the building in Area C and the kiln installations were destroyed, while the cave dwellings were apparently abandoned at the same time. They further note that parts of the fort required reconstruction following this destruction. Floor deposits were removed and dumped outside the fort, and new bathing and heating installations were constructed within the interior. Additional rooms were added along the eastern exterior and lower slope, indicating a substantial reorganization of the built environment following the destructive episode.
