End of Stratum V Earthquake Open site page in a new tab

Yannai (2014) noted that an "immense building" in Area B of Stratum V was damaged, "possibly" in an earthquake, "either that of 1033 or of 1068 CE." Stratum V was "ascribed to the Abbasid period and the beginning of the Fatimid period." Following this destruction, "several massive walls were erected inside the structure, apparently in order to reinforce it (Stratum IV)," a phase that was "ascribed to the end of the Fatimid period." Yannai (2014) further observed that Stratum V buildings in Area C1 were likewise "destroyed by a second earthquake, either the one that struck in 1033 or that of 1068 CE." The partially destroyed buildings were subsequently renovated, forming a second construction phase within Stratum V.
