End of Period I Earthquake

Glueck (1965:92) reported that Altar-Base I from Period I was severely damaged, “probably by an earthquake,” an event that may have precipitated the rebuilding episode marking the beginning of Period II. On the basis of architectural and stratigraphic evidence, McKenzie et al. (2013:47) dated the construction of Period II, which would have followed shortly after the earthquake ending Period I, to the first half of the second century CE. This chronology is supported by ceramic evidence reported by McKenzie et al. (2002:50), who noted that a bowl recovered from beneath paving stones laid shortly before Period II construction dates to the late first century CE, together with two additional bowls dated to the first half of the second century CE. This ceramic assemblage, combined with comparative evidence from other sites, led them to place the construction of Period II in the first half of the second century CE.
