Nigro and Taha (2013:2) uncovered a destruction layer (F.1688) at the southern foot of the Tell in Area A. This layer, which “included rubble heaps” and reaches a thickness of up to 0.6 m, was identified as the result of “a major destructive event, which took place towards the end of the 18th century BC (around the mid of the Egyptian 13th Dynasty) and might be attributed to a violent earthquake.”

Above this destruction layer lay the remains of a Canaanite city that ended in another destruction, which the excavators attributed to a military attack in the mid-17th century BCE (~1650 BCE). This “last MB II (Sultan IVb2) destruction layer” was designated F.166 (inside House A3), and “burnt fallen down bricks, ashes, charcoals, and human remains” were found within it in Tower A1 (F.162).
