In volume 2 of his book Letters on Egypt, Edom, and the Holy Land, Alexander Lindsay observed earthquake damage across Galilee and the southern Levant, attributed to the 1 January 1837 CE Safed Earthquake.

In Jerash, he notes that a rotunda on the High Street (possibly the north Tetrapylon) “suffered much from the recent earthquake,” and reports Mr. Moore’s testimony that columns “chattered on their bases.” He also remarks on “many recent ruins,” indicating fresh collapses.
