Pottery Kilns Earthquake Open site page in a new tab
Gawlikowski (1986:117) notes that occupation in the South Decumanus housing complex was partially abandoned following an earthquake, after which pottery kilns were installed. A massive stone tumble was exposed in several of the rooms of the housing complex and in the subsequent reconstruction, doors were blocked and the site was levelled up. Because Gawlikowski (1986:117) also states that “no sign of occupation later than the ninth century could be identified in the excavated area,” the collapse can be placed broadly between 750 and 900 CE, with a probable occurrence sometime during the ninth century.
