The remains of the ancient city of Perrhe lie on the northern outskirts of the modern town of Adıyaman. The earliest occupation of the site appears to go back to the Paleolithic. By sometime in the 2nd century BCE, Perrhe was one of the core cities of the Kingdom of Commagene which became a permanent part of the Roman Empire by 72 CE. After Perrhe was captured by the Arabs, it was renamed to Hisn Mansur. It apparently was a contested town and was variously ruled by the Byzantine Empire, Armenian rulers, the Abbasid Caliphate, and, presumably, others. Adıyaman was heavily damaged during the February 2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquakes.
