Moshe Dothan in Stern et al. (1993 v.2) states that "all the structures [of Level IA] were destroyed at the beginning of the Abbasid period, around the middle of the eighth century, and that they were never rebuilt." Magness (2005) explains that in his excavation reports Dothan attributed the destruction of the Stratum IA synagogue to one of the 749 CE Sabbatical Year Quakes. Magness, however, places Stratum IA much later in date, assigning it to the ninth–tenth centuries CE. She does not posit that it was destroyed by an earthquake.
