Phase I Earthquake (?) Open this page in a new tab

Hirschfeld et al. (1997:125) suggest that the columned portal, an entranceway to Area C, "was added to the hall [in Area C] after the earthquake of 363 C.E.." They noted that a "distinct" and "surprisingly rough and irregular" architectural seam "separates the western pilaster from the pier behind it." The fact that the builders of the columned portal "did not bother to conceal it, but rather chose to emphasize it," may have been "their way of commemorating an earthquake that had destroyed parts of the building." Hirschfeld et al. (1997:125) dated the portal’s original construction to the 2nd century CE and its rebuilding to the 4th century CE, based on stylistic considerations. Magness (2010) accepted this chronology and did not revise Hirschfeld et al.’s (1997) Phase I.
