End of Stratum III Destruction Layer Open site page in a new tab

Onn and Weksler-Bdolah (2016) report that following an earlier phase marked by a thin ash layer covering tombs, the area was reused during the early Islamic period, when walls and pebble floors were constructed above the burial installations. This habitation phase, which dates from the second half of the eighth century CE, probably began after the earthquake of 749 CE and continued to flourish into the early ninth century CE. The buildings were ultimately sealed by a distinct destruction layer that the excavators suggest may relate to the earthquake of 853 CE, associated with the Tiberias Landslide Quake.
