Several sources — including nearly contemporaneous Yahya of Antioch — report that an earthquake struck Damascus and the vicinity of Baalbek, on the night of 5 April 991 CE. Accounts describe the collapse of a thousand or more houses in Damascus and numerous fatalities. Strong aftershocks reportedly continued for about a month, accompanied by indications of seismic damage elsewhere in the region.
