Iron II Earthquake - Iron II Open this page in a new tab

Kelso et al. (1968:37) reported in a single sentence that an “Iron II wall…had fallen during an earthquake.” This feature, uncovered in 1957, was located in what appears to be test area H, immediately west of and adjacent to the west wall of the "madafeh ʿIlliyet esh-Sheik.” Just beneath the Iron II layer, Kelso et al. (1968:37) also found a large, in situ, and “almost intact” Iron I storage jar. In the traditional or High chronology, Iron II dates from 1000-586 BCE. In the low chronology, the start date is ~925 BCE rather than 1000 BCE.
