Theophanes, writing almost 500 years after the event, reports that "most of the city of Berytos [Beirut] in Phoenicia collapsed during a severe earthquake." Writing over two centuries later than Theophanes, George Cedrenus similarly notes that "there was a great earthquake in Berytus in Phoenicia, and most of the city collapsed."
