William McClure Thomson was an American Protestant missionary who spent 25 years in the Levant and wrote a book titled "The Land and the Book" that became a best-seller in the USA for 40 years after its initial publication in 1861 CE. The book is framed around a pilgrimage undertaken in 1857 CE. He experienced the 1834 CE Fellahin Revolt Earthquake first hand and was one of the first outsiders to visit Safed after the 1837 CE Safed Quake (wikipedia).
