Lock (2016:5) indicates that Marino Sanudo the Elder was extremely well read. Lock (2016:6) notes that, apart from the Vulgate Bible he tells us in various places in the text, or occasionally by inference, that he consulted the authors and/or books presented below. Despite this, Lock (2016:8) states that we have no idea of what specific texts he used or if they have survived to this day. Lock (2016:8) adds that the version of the William of Tyre text he consulted is no longer extant.
