Gospel of Peter
Although the apocryphal
Gospel of Peter was referred to by a number of ancient authors, a copy of the text
was not found until an extant ~8th century CE copy was discovered in archaeological excavations in Upper Egypt between 1886 and 1887 CE (
Foster, 2007:319).
When this Gospel was first composed is unknown but Eusebius wrote that a copy was circulating in the late second century CE
(
Foster, 2007:319). The text opens with a scene in the Passion Narrative and the author claims to be the
Disciple Peter.
