Despite his namesake, wikipedia reports that Ali of Herat (aka Abū al-Ḥasan ʻAlī ibn Abū Bakr al-Harawī - died 1215 CE) was born in Mosul. But, his family was Persian and from Herat. Ali travelled the Islamic world, was the first known graffiti artist of the Muslim world writing many inscriptions (wikipedia), and, according to wikipedia, wrote several books including: Ali died in Aleppo; supposedly in a fort built for him by Saladin's son (wikipedia).
