Kondo et al. (2024) report a seismic event identified in the Kartal Trench, which intersects the East Anatolian Fault System, occurred prior to the 2023 M_W 7.8 Kahramanmaraş earthquake and post-dates 1054 CE. Dating was based on radiocarbon dating. They propose that this event may correspond to either the 1114 CE Mamistra and Marash earthquakes or the 1513 CE Marash earthquake. The deformation observed in the trench likely indicates predominantly left-lateral strike-slip.
