Taxel (2013:173) reports that Messika (2006) attributed the destruction of the church and the entire Umayyad settlement either to the 747–749 CE earthquake(s) or to “violent actions related to religious or political struggles.” However, Taxel (2013:173) notes that this proposal cannot be confirmed “based on the fragmentary evidence available.”
