No Evidence - mid-8th century CE Earthquake Open site page in a new tab
Zimni-Gitler in Lichtenberger and Raja (2025:175) reports that excavations in the Jewish Quarter revealed the Roman-Byzantine Cardo as the principal street, but evidence for structures or clear activity between the sixth and thirteenth centuries CE is largely missing. Pottery above the Cardo includes only a few Early Islamic sherds, and while isolated Umayyad and Abbasid coins indicate some continued use, no destruction or repair layers point to an eighth-century earthquake. The absence of collapsed architecture or rebuilding suggests that if seismic damage occurred, it left no discernible archaeological trace in these areas.
