End of Stratum IV Destruction Open site page in a new tab

Hirschfeld and Gutfeld (2008) report that Stratum IV was covered by a thick layer of debris and alluvium. The excavation report does not identify any archaeoseismic indicators associated with this deposit, and no earthquake destruction is attributed to Stratum IV. Remains of the pre-Islamic Stratum IV were found only in two places and, although their precise date remains uncertain, they were sealed by fills belonging to the Early Islamic period. In Square D/5 a wall and the upper course of wall W.26 were dated by the adjacent fill (L.170), which contained material ranging from the 1st century BCE to the 6th century CE. The overlying Stratum III was dated to the 8th–10th centuries CE.
