al-Dhahabi recorded that a prodigious earthquake struck al-Sham (Greater Syria) during the month of Ramadan in A.H. 130 (4 May – 2 June 748 CE). He described it as the most violent earthquake in Jerusalem, noting that many of the faithful (Ansars or not) perished. The houses of Shaddad ibn Aws collapsed upon him and his guests; Muhammad ibn Shadda survived but lost his property beneath the ruins.

al-Dhahabi also cites another report stating that the western and eastern parts of the Al Aqsa Mosque were damaged during the earthquake of A.H. 130. Repairs were financed by removing the silver and gold plates that had adorned the mosque’s doors.
