Jamal ad-Din Ahmad recorded that the western and eastern parts of the Al Aqsa Mosque were damaged during the earthquake of A.H. 130. Caliph al-Mansur (r. 754–775 CE) ordered repairs, which were financed by removing the silver and gold plates that had covered the mosque’s doors. A later earthquake caused the restored structure to fall to the ground. The mosque remained in ruins until Caliph al-Mahdi (r. 775–785 CE) commissioned its rebuilding, though to different dimensions.
