Yahya of Antioch recorded that a great earthquake in Damascus occurred on the night of 5 April 991 CE, causing more than a thousand houses to collapse and many deaths. He also wrote that a village in the vicinity of Baalbek was swallowed up on the same night, and noted that further earthquakes struck in Damascus and in the province, with aftershocks continuing until 5 May 991 CE.
